Exhibition Text:
The Sun is a heavily symbolic piece featuring allusions to self growth, burn out, the passage of time, and legacy in the various details in the painting. The self portrait depicts me in a finely detailed dress inspired by Mucha's intricate prints which burns up at the edges into fire and butterflies, symbolizing the cost of self growth achieved through burn out and overexertion. The idea for the piece was inspired by an original poem about legacy and growth.
Accompanying Poem
I refuse to liken myself to a candle blazing at both ends,
whether that be out of hope or denial,
but rather a star burning up, sending flares of light into the universe with every idea cast off,
and you will continue to see me long after I am gone.
